The world’s most famous pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, has lost its patents on Viagra, one of the world’s leading treatments for erectile dysfunction.
But the drugmaker has finally won the backing of some industry insiders who say they want to make sure it stays out of the hands of drug companies.
A Pfizer official told The Associated Press that the firm is in talks to buy the drug, though the stock had been at a discount earlier this year, possibly because of concerns about potential sales.
The official noted Pfizer’s patent for Viagra expired in March and is still pending in the United States. Pfizer is hoping to start selling the pill online and have it approved for sale in Europe. But regulators have so far largely banned the sale, preferring to keep Pfizer’s patent for the drug off the market.
“We think that the decision to sell has been made on a case-by-case basis,” said Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, a urologist and chief executive officer of Menarini. “It’s one of the most profitable medicines we’ve ever had.”
Viagra has been a top-selling drug since it was first developed in the sixties by Dr. Sid Haldol in the sixties, but it was overshadowed by criticism from some investors who suspected Pfizer of having been trying to get it down the toilet.
In 2013, Pfizer disclosed that it was working on a new drug to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug, known generically as sildenafil, was approved in the United States in 2017 and is the first to be approved for use in Europe. It will be sold in generic form and comes in a pill form.
Pfizer has been trying to sell Viagra as a way to help men who don’t respond to other ED drugs. Last year, it was announced that the drugmaker would begin selling generic sildenafil online, a move Pfizer has been trying to do all of this and more to help the industry sell.
The company’s Viagra has faced criticism in the past, from some investors who called it a “phony-phony” drug. Pfizer has been trying to sell generic sildenafil for decades, but generic versions of Viagra have not materialised. Pfizer said it would continue selling Viagra even if it discovered that it was not working as well as the original drug.
“I think the main message is that this is about people who want to try something else,” said John Lechleiter, a former Pfizer employee.
“The question is, is this really a good thing?”
Viagra has been the most popular drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction since its launch in the sixties.
Dr Haldol’s drug, known generically as sildenafil, was first developed as a treatment for angina, a sudden heart condition. It was a big step forward for Pfizer, which now has more than 100 patents on the drug, with some of the larger companies also looking for ways to make money by selling generic sildenafil.
The drugmaker was forced to drop its patent protection in 2017 after a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that men who took the drug for a long time had an 84 percent higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. The drug has not been approved for use in Europe.
The drugmaker has also been trying to sell generic sildenafil in what many believe to be a cheaper way to sell the drug.
The company has been working to put sildenafil on the market for years, but the drug has not been approved for sale in the United States. Pfizer says it is trying to sell generic versions of Viagra and has approved generic versions of Cialis since they were first approved for sale.
Viagra is a close second to Cialis, at about $100 a pill. Cialis is one of the few ED drugs, although it’s the most popular ED drug in the world and is only available by prescription.
Pfizer is not the first drugmaker to make some sort of payment that they claim to be trying to keep out of the hands of drugmakers.
A similar firm, Pfizer Inc’s CVS Health and Walgreens Inc’s Rite Aid have been given a patent-protected monopoly on the drug.
